The farm has 50 hectares planted with coffee and also grows corn, wheat, and soy. The production of corn, wheat, and soy, along with coffee ensures the farm has income across the year. Teodoro (Teo) Engelhardt had a difficult harvest at La Bella due to heavy frost conditions in December and January. The December temperatures were the most problematic as the frost arrived with light rain and strong winds. The trees were highly stressed and dropped their leaves to protect the fruit on the tree. This in turn affects photosynthesis and damages the maturation of the cherries and the health of the trees. Much of the cherry went from green to dried on the trees, missing the important maturing stage where flavour and sweetness are developed. Julio is the president of the cooperative and a contributing farmer. We were fortunate to visit his farm and spend time tasting coffees with the team at the cooperative offices and laboratory. Julio has two plots which make up his farm; one plot is at 1800m and is planted with Americano, Catimor, and Parainema; the second is higher in altitude at 2300m and is planted with Geisha, SL09, Bourbon, Typica, Catimor. The farm is small, some three hectares, but is located very close to the cooperative’s processing facilities. This means Julio can deliver his harvest from the higher plot by gravity with a pipe directly connected to the processing station.
