      "description": "Gibson G ibson is a humanist sans serif typeface designed by eminent Canadian type designer Rod McDonald FGDC to honour John Gibson FGDC (1928–2011), Rod’s long-time friend and one of the original founders of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (DesCan, formerly GDC). As well as paying tribute to John Gibson’s productive life and love of the typographic arts, the Gibson family was intended to be a mainstay of the future of Canadian design education. Many Canadian design schools and institutions made it part of their larger type education programs. Since its release in 2011, Gibson’s versatility and clean features made it the most used Canadian typeface nationally and globally. It has become a universal favourite for corporate and branding directors as well as UX designers and creatives in all fields. The Gibson family comes in 9 weights ranging from Thin to Heavy, and their matching italics for a total of 18 fonts. Each of the Gibson fonts comes with more than 1,200 glyphs, Pan-European language support and a plethora of stylistic alternates. Gibson Arabic and Gibson Hebrew are also available separately. The Gibson VF variable fonts, developed in 2023 and greatly expanded in 2025, are included with the license of the complete Gibson family package. The entirety of Gibson’s sales revenues are used to support a variety of causes aiming to improve the typographic arts and elevate design education in Canada.       "description": "Hannibal H annibal was the typeface used exclusively in Jim Rimmer’s limited edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which is now the stuff of Canadian book crafts legend. The original typeface (named after Mark Twain’s hometown in Missouri) was a very basic two-set of a roman and an italic intended for use solely in the making of one private press book. What positioned it uniquely in type lore was its status as the first new face made for the Monotype composition caster in more than a quarter century (since the Gauthiers 11 series cut for the Imprimerie Nationale in 1978), and the only homemade face ever made for said caster. In the twenty-first century, no less! Hannibal’s forms exhibit a recognizable Jim Rimmer aesthetic with clear deco and mid-century type influences. Similar roots and branches are evident in Albertan, Amethyst, and Rimmer, Jim’s other body copy faces. A couple of decades after Jim’s book placed itself prominently in the Canadian book arts, we bring its typeface into the mainstream as a workhorse family, including all the bells and whistles of fine typography. This Hannibal family boasts six weights and their italics, each including a full complement of small caps, an extended series of ligatures, plenty of stylistic alternates, five kinds of figures, automatic fractions, and extended support for Latin languages. During all the craziness and uncertainty surrounding lockdowns and work-from-home mandates, the veteran designer decided to revisit the classic Egyptienne/Italienne/French Clarendon aesthetic and make it his very own with two extra spoons of fun and a generous dollop of cheer. Quirkwood is what we have after his typographic bender, and we believe our world is all the better for it. This is a spaghetti western with Shazam and Wile E. Coyote cast in prominent starring roles, a bluegrass album of Edith Piaf covers. By reconfiguring a classic archetype's DNA and introducing new quirks to it, Robby presents a uniquely sunny and wholesome character with this typeface. The common reverse-stress-slab treatment goes a long way for sure, but there are also plenty of unusual elements working hard in the background here: Ball endings harmonizing with thick soft rectangles, diagonals cutting light into thick softnesses, eager open midsections guiding the eyeballs, strokes thickening into curled serifs just short of swashing out, and giddy extenders bopping along to an eccentric beat. Quirkwood offers plenty more bells and whistles: Contrast and weight variants, chromatic colour possibilities in layering, stylistic and contextual alternates, small caps, standard and discretionary ligatures, and other OpenType features. This time he has really outdone himself by bringing us Roma, a definitive, contemporary, mature sans serif expression of those majuscules. With Roma, Lincoln is not satisfied with simply creating a proper Trajan Sans. He goes on to make it a family of four weights, with built-in small caps and oldstyle figures, then he really goes to town with the options he makes available for shading and multi-color settings.
